"You and your colleagues damn well destroyed this country," Row in the Dáil over housing records

There was a row in the Dáil today over who's been worse when it comes to housing.

Micheál Martin points out Alan Kelly was part of the government that invited investment funds into Ireland.

Kelly says the Taoiseach has "some cheek" given who he sat beside at cabinet in the Bertie days.

The Taoiseach says housing remains the Government’s number one priority.

Micheál Martin was speaking on his way into Cabinet yesterday, where senior ministers were updated on proposals to curb the influence of property investment funds in Ireland.

The Housing and Finance Ministers have been working on changes to planning and tax laws to stop investment funds buying up new housing estates.

However, the plans aren't expected to be finalised until later this week.

Recent weeks have seen growing public anger and frustration over large numbers of homes in some estates being bought up by investment funds.

Opposition parties have called for an end to tax breaks for such funds, as well as for an overhaul of the country's planning laws to address such issues.

On his way into Cabinet, the Taoiseach said housing is the Government's key focus.

He said: "In terms of the housing situation, be in no doubt that Government regards the housing issue as its number one priority.

"We will be doing everything we possibly can to provide housing for people - and we have to get the supply up."
