Bleeding control is a critical trauma skill for EMTs and first responders. Uncontrolled bleeding can quickly lead to shock and death, making it one of the most essential skills on the NREMT exam and in real-world emergencies.

In this EMT training video, you’ll learn:

Arterial bleeding → Bright red, spurting with heartbeat, most dangerous due to rapid blood loss.

Venous bleeding → Dark red, steady flow, can still be life-threatening.

Capillary bleeding → Slow oozing, usually clots on its own.

Treatment Principles:

Always start with direct pressure using sterile gauze/bandages.

Do not remove soaked gauze — add more layers on top.

Apply firm, continuous pressure and secure dressings.

Use a tourniquet only if necessary, and only on extremities (especially for uncontrolled arterial bleeding).

Elevation and wound care may be sufficient for minor bleeding.

👉 NREMT Tip: Remember the differences in bleeding types (arterial vs venous vs capillary) and the correct interventions for each.
