10 Things You Didn't Know About Botswana - Discover Botswana

Botswana is a landlocked country in the southern part of the African continent. It is located to the north of South Africa. Its other neighboring countries are Namibia, Zimbabwe, and Zambia. Undoubtedly one of the most beautiful countries in Africa, Botswana has a landscape like no other. From vast stretches of golden desert to flooding rivers, parched salt pans, and sprawling savannahs teeming with migrating mammals – this landlocked country is an awe-inspiring safari destination. Lions roam its unspoiled lands freely while superb birdlife flies above; majestic elephants bathe in the Chobe River, and white rhinos fight for territory against a fiery African sunset - this is the Botswana you don’t see on your everyday TV, a spectacle of sights and sounds, and the continent’s most exclusive safari destination. With a little over 2 million people, Botswana is one of the world’s most sparsely populated nations, yet one of the richest in pristine wildlife and dramatic scenery. However, there is so much more to this unspoilt, fascinating landlocked country than meets the eye, so let us unveil a little bit of the mystery with these 10 things you probably didn’t know about Botswana.
Number 1: Botswana is the world’s No.1 diamond producing country in terms of value.
Even though Russia is the number 1 country that produced diamonds in terms of volume, Botswana spear heads as number 1 in the world in terms of value. Nestled in the Naledi River Valley in southern Botswana, Jwaneng is the richest diamond mine in the world. The open pit mine is located 120 km west of the capital Gaborone and sits above 3 diamond producing geological formations. The high quality of rough diamonds produced here is outstanding, which is why this industry plays a major role in driving the country’s economy.
Number 2: Botswana is home to fabulous ancient rock art.
Nicknamed the “Louvre of the Desert”, the Tsodilo Hills in north-west Botswana play host to one of the highest concentrations of rock art in the world. Additionally, the area – now a UNESCO World Heritage Site - has a great cultural and spiritual significance, and some of the 4,500 paintings found in the shelters and caves of these sacred hills are believed to date as far back as the Stone Age.
Number 3: Here you’ll find the world’s biggest concentration of African elephants.
Botswana is home to the densest elephant population in the world. The best place to spot them is at Chobe National Park, where they come to the Chobe River Front to play, drink and swim. So, you will not only see cars on the roads in Botswana; also watch out for elephants crossing the main roads.
Number 4: The Currency of Botswana means “Rain”. The currency of Botswana is Pula. The word pula means “rain” in the local language. Since much of Botswana is desert, rainfall is a rare event in the country, and is therefore highly valuable and considered to be a blessing.
Number 5: Botswana is the best country to get up close to meerkats.
Teeming with meerkats, the Kalahari Desert in Botswana is the best place in the world to observe, photograph, and learn about these adorable, friendly creatures.
