5 Opal Patterns Explained By Justin AT blackopaldirect.com
Welcome to Black Opal Direct!
What patterns can there be in an opal? Justin shows us 5 gemstones and 5 different opal patterns.
There are a few factors that make each opal a completely unique gemstone, like color play, and one of them is pattern.
First up, Justin shows us a stone with what’s called a “Sheen Pattern” or “Moss Pattern.” Opals with this pattern are common to the Grawin Fields in Lightning Ridge and show even color play across the stone that moves within the “moss” itself.
Next, we have a gemstone with “Sky Mackerel Pattern” which is a rare pattern for an opal to have. Sky Mackerel Pattern looks like a sunset sky and has rippling clouds of color through the stone.
The third stone is an example of “Chinese Writing Pattern” which looks kind of like beautiful calligraphy of Chinese writing. This is Justin's favorite pattern.
After that, Justin shows us the fourth stone which is an example of “Broad Flash Pattern.” This pattern shows a beautiful broad flash of color that goes right across the stone and then disappears.
The last gem Justin shows us has “Rolling Flash Pattern” which can be seen by holding the opal and rolling it back and forth. When rolling the gem, the pattern rolls back and forth with it and creates a flash of colors. This pattern is similar to “Cat's Eye Pattern” in other gemstones.
We hope that you enjoy this video and that it helps you to understand some of the ways that opals express their color and beauty. If you do, be sure to check out our other videos or head to our blog to read more:
