Have you ever noticed that a lot of Disney characters look and act similar? That some iconic Disney characters find their counterparts in other Disney movies? Or that specific shots and animation sequences are actually identical?

After the success of Snow White and the Seven Dwarves in 1937, Disney had to meet a new demand for animated feature films and the process of hand-drawing and animating each still of a movie was time-consuming and costly. So Disney started digging into its own archive to reuse its own animation in newer pictures. The practice continued through to the current era of Disney animation, which has shifted into CGI and put an end to the recycling of animated characters and styles. At the time no one ever thought that people would eventually have the capacity to play and replay and compare movies side-by-side, so there was no harm and no foul. But now we can compare and see how moments and characters repeat themselves across Disney’s canon! From parallel characters like Cinderella and Aurora, or Maleficent and Lady Tremaine, to innocuous establishing shots reused from one movie to another, these doppelganger moments are going to be impossible to unsee!
