This Exoplanet Has Hydrogen Cyanide in Its Atmosphere — 41 Light-Years Away.

55 Cancri e is a super-Earth twice the size of our planet, covered in molten lava, orbiting its star in just 18 hours. It lies 41 light-years away in the constellation Cancer.

As it transited in front of its parent star, astronomers decoded the light passing through its atmosphere — and found something unexpected: helium, hydrogen, and traces of hydrogen cyanide, one of the most toxic molecules known to science.

This is how we read the atmosphere of an alien world without ever visiting it.

☠️ A lava world. A poison sky. 41 light-years away.

Follow — the universe keeps getting stranger.
