The Cape Parrot ⭐️
Meet the Cape Parrot (Poicephalus robustus) 🦜✨
This is PS10026 — a male.
Cape parrots are a larger Poicephalus species (same genus as Senegals and Meyers), but they’re unique to South Africa, where they’re closely tied to Afromontane forests—especially areas with yellowwood trees that provide important food sources.
A few quick Cape Parrot facts to help you appreciate what you’re seeing:
Conservation status: listed as Vulnerable (habitat loss/fragmentation is a major factor, along with other pressures).
Built for cracking hard foods: they have an impressively strong beak adapted for hard nuts and kernels (a big part of how they feed in the wild).
A true forest specialist: unlike some related Poicephalus that thrive in savanna habitats, Cape parrots are strongly associated with temperate forest systems.
If you want more information about our birds—or how we approach training and daily care—check out our podcast and visit us in-store at Parrot Stars (Arlington Heights, IL). And if you’re curious about this specific bird, mention PS10026 when you reach out. #parrotstars #parrotstarspodcast #capeparrot
