DC Shunts explained | What is DC shunt | How shunt is used | Learn from the manufacturer | YOKINS
This video provides complete information about shunt
What is shunt and How is shunt used
What is shunt
Like CT is used to measure AC current similarly Shunts are used for measuring DC current as high currents cannot be directly measured with meters or other devices directly. So we use shunts along with meters or other measuring devices to measure DC current in the circuit.
It’s a low resistance which is made up of two conductor metals on the sides generally brass or copper and magnin strip which acts as resistance in between.
Shunts comes in different shapes and sizes but the most common are as per IS1248 or DIN 43703 standards. Also it comes in different ranges as per current requirement from 1Amp to 15000Amp and different milli volts outputs which are generally 60mV, 75mV, 150mV
How it is used
Shunt is directly connected in series in the circuit so that complete current to be measured flows through it. Though the shunt doesn’t have its own polarity like resistance, but after being connected in the circuit its polarity becomes same as the circuit, so needs to be connected to the meter carefully considering the polarity. It is preferably connected on negative side in the circuit.
The shunt and meter used to measure DC current should have same rating i.e. if we are using shunt of 50A/75mV then meter should also be of same rating then only we will get accurate reading.
In this we need to explain that when current of 50A flows through shunt of 50A/75mV, it gives output or mV drop of 75mV, which is measured by the meter and meter shows proportional current of 50A on the meter. Similarly if current of 25A flows through the same shunt it will give output of 37.5mV which will be input of meter and meter will show it as 25A. In analog meters these scales are generally fixed but in digital meters we can program it. Shunts can be used with moving coil panel meters, digital panel meters, PLCs,
We hope you have understood basics of shunt, for more information you can visit our website www.yokins.com and contact us.
Along with shunts we also manufacture Analog and digital panel meters, digital displays, insulation testers, current transformers, electronic buzzer, etc.
