Intervals *Part II* (Ear Training) - Identifying Intervals Using Popular Songs

We are back with the second installment of Intervals! In our previous video, we talked about MAJOR and PERFECT intervals and so today we’re going to be looking at songs with MINOR, AUGMENTED and DIMINISHED.

So what are some ways we can train our ears to recognize the different distances between notes? Well the best way to do this is to find a song that you know 100%. What’s the catchiest part of the song for you? (The part that you find yourself singing over and over again.) If you are able to hum that melody, that’s a plus! Once you have that, figure out what the first two notes of that part are. What you’re doing is you’re adding to the library in your brain a name for the first two notes of that chorus that you can’t get out of your head. And the next time you hear someone play those two notes - whether you’re jamming with a friend or you’re doing a melodic dictation in class - you’ll be like "oh that’s a major 3rd."
