Spanje tijdens de Tweede Wereldoorlog

Tijdens de Tweede Wereldoorlog bleef Spanje, onder het dictatorschap van Francisco Franco, officieel neutraal, maar zijn positie was complex en veranderlijk. Het Spanje van Franco, dat net een wrede burgeroorlog achter de rug had (1936-1939), was niet in staat om nog een conflict aan te gaan. Franco stond echter ideologisch op één lijn met de Asmogendheden, vooral Duitsland en fascistisch Italië, die hem beide hadden gesteund tijdens de Spaanse burgeroorlog.
Franco bood beperkte, onofficiële steun aan de As. Spanje stond bijvoorbeeld toe dat Duitse U-boten zijn havens gebruikten en verschafte inlichtingen aan de As. De belangrijkste bijdrage was de Blauwe Divisie (División Azul), een vrijwillige eenheid die aan de zijde van de Duitsers vocht aan het Oostfront tegen de Sovjet-Unie. Desondanks was Franco terughoudend om zich volledig in te zetten voor de zaak van de As, omdat hij zich bewust was van de verzwakte staat van Spanje en de mogelijke gevolgen van het vervreemden van de Geallieerden.
Spanje onderhield ook economische betrekkingen met beide partijen en verkocht wolfraam aan Duitsland terwijl het handel bleef drijven met de Geallieerden. Toen de oorlog zich tegen de As keerde, nam Franco steeds meer afstand van Spanje. Uiteindelijk nam hij een neutralere houding aan om repercussies van de Geallieerden te voorkomen en zo de naoorlogse stabiliteit van Spanje te bewaren.
