A CPC in Pain Medicine Testing
Overdoses on prescription opioids have become a major problem in the United States, accounting for over 16,000 deaths and half a million emergency department visits annually. This Grand Rounds presentation uses example cases to discuss opioid abuse and the role the laboratory can play in determining medication compliance. The advantages and limitations of laboratory testing, especially immunoassays and mass spectrometry are discussed. Time is spent detailing how urine drug testing results can be used to determine ingested drugs and common methods with which patients attempt to evade detection of drug abuse. Finally, risk factors for opioid misuse are presented.
