Thin Gauge Thermoforming Lesson #6: Part Trimming and Finished Part Properties
Thermoformed parts must be accurately trimmed. This lesson moves to the final thermoforming step, trimming. The types of trimming, both knife-like and shear trimming (matched metal) are shown and explained.
Thin Gauge Thermoforming Lesson #6 also covers tabbing and shimming. Using an analysis of the structure of the formed part properties, the lesson explains the effects of heating, forming and cooling on the finished thermoformed part properties. It is the internal structure and optimal distribution of the plastic in the part(s) that determines if the thermoformed parts meet customer specifications.
Lesson 6 concludes with a recommended efficient start-up procedure that will ultimately limit internal stresses.
