Gymnosperms (gymnos = naked, sperma = seed) are the most ancient seed producing plants (spermatophyte) that bears naked seeds on the surface of megasporophyll.
 Hence, unlike angiosperms, seeds of gymnosperms are not enclosed in ovary and are also known as phanerogams without ovary.
Origin
 This group of seed plants originated during the Palaeozoic era.
 They were well flourished over the earth’s surface during the Jurassic and Cretaceous periods of Mesozoic era.
