Learn how to create a folder on your iPad home screen to organise your apps. I use this all the time to group similar apps together like social media, games, or work tools. The process works the same on iPad Pro, iPad Air, iPad mini, and the regular iPad running iPadOS 14 or newer.

Start by finding any app on your home screen that you want to put inside a folder. Press and hold your finger on that app icon until a small menu pops up. Learn how to enter edit mode without opening the menu by mistake. If the menu appears, tap outside of it to close it and try again. This time press and hold slightly longer until all the app icons start jiggling. I show you how to spot the difference between the quick action menu and the edit mode. Once the icons are jiggling, drag one app on top of another app. A grey box will appear showing both apps together. Let go, and the iPad automatically creates a new folder with both apps inside.

Learn how to rename the folder right after creating it. The iPad suggests a name based on the apps you put together, like Productivity or Games. Tap the name field at the top of the folder window to type your own name. I use short names like Tools, Social, or Read so they fit easily on the screen. If you want to add more apps to an existing folder, make sure the icons are still jiggling. Drag any other app from the home screen into the folder. You can also drag an app from a different page by pulling it to the edge of the screen. The iPad will switch pages automatically. Learn how to move multiple apps at once by holding one app with one finger and tapping other apps with another finger. They stack together so you can move them all into the folder in one go. I show you how this trick saves time when organising a cluttered home screen.

To remove an app from a folder without deleting the folder, open the folder and drag the app out onto the home screen. The folder stays as long as there are at least two apps inside. Learn how to delete a folder completely by dragging every app out of it. The folder disappears on its own once it is empty. No extra steps are needed.

One last thing. Folders can hold multiple pages of apps. If you put more than nine apps in a folder, the folder creates a second page inside. Swipe left or right inside the folder to see the other pages. This is useful if you want to keep a lot of apps in one folder without taking up too much home screen space. I use this for photo editing apps and rarely used tools. The whole process takes less than a minute once you get used to it.
