Ketamine In The ER vs Ketamine Therapy

What's the radical difference between ketamine in emergency medicine versus ketamine therapy? Dr. Carl Bonnett explains with a perfect metaphor.

ER Ketamine Use:
✅ Intention: Sedate for painful procedures
✅ Goal: Complete disconnection
✅ Like pressing the clutch all the way to the floor
✅ Fully disengage to "change gears"

Ketamine Therapy Use:
✅ Intention: Ego dissolution and disruption
✅ Goal: Therapeutic dissociation, not complete disconnect
✅ Patients remain responsive to verbal stimuli
✅ Like "just riding the clutch a little bit"

Dr. Bonnett: "It's not very often in history that some medication has one indication, just a whole way of using it, which then everything is radically changed. It is completely different what we're doing now versus what we're doing in the ER."

Same medication, completely different application - from full disconnection to therapeutic disconnection.
