She Was Pregnant When They Injected It — The Label Said Radioactive — The Form Said Vitamins
820 pregnant women received it at Vanderbilt
University between 1945 and 1947. The radioactive
compound crossed the placenta and entered the
developing fetus. Not one of those women was told
what was actually in the injection. The files were
classified. Three children from the study developed
cancer. That finding went into a government report
that stayed secret for decades.
In 1994 — nearly 50 years later — some of those
women received a letter from the government
explaining what had happened at that appointment.
