Has Cancel Culture Gone Too Far? | Amanpour and Company

An online playbook seems to be emerging around some of the political conversations taking place: someone says something deemed offensive or troubling, social media goes into a frenzy, and that person is effectively “cancelled.” An open letter recently published in Harper’s Magazine argues that this process poses a threat to free speech. The letter, signed by 153 prominent writers, academics, and artists, has become a controversial topic online. Walter Isaacson speaks with the letter’s co-author, Thomas Chatterton Williams, to discuss ways and means in an age of moral reckoning.
Originally aired on July 22, 2020.
