Rubens’ Last Supper – Drama, Light, and Flemish Power #zoomart #Rubens #LastSupper

Peter Paul Rubens’ Last Supper, created between 1631 and 1632, is one of the most powerful Flemish masterpieces preserved in the Pinacoteca di Brera. 🎨
The painting was commissioned by Catherine Lescuyer to honor her father and originally belonged to the chapel of the Santissimo Sacramento in the church of St. Romuald in Malines. It arrived in Brera in 1813, part of an exchange involving works taken by Napoleon. 📜✨

Rubens blends Flemish drama with Italian Renaissance influence, especially from the Venetian masters. The bold lines, warm colors, and intense lighting create a scene filled with emotion and spiritual tension. Christ raises the bread and wine, while the apostles react with devotion, surprise, and contemplation. 🍞🍷

The painting was executed with the help of Rubens’ workshop, yet it carries the unmistakable power of his late style: monumental forms, classical balance, and a glowing atmosphere that transforms the sacred moment into a dramatic revelation. 🌟🏛️
