Pink Floyd’s “Dogs,” Recreated
The completion of my Animals trilogy. Next up, new remixes and HD renders of “Pigs (Three Different Ones)” and “Sheep,” and of course, a recreation of “Pigs on the Wing.” My next upload will be the complete Animals album, recreated from start to finish. Please subscribe!
Recording notes:
In 1998, Stove Clock and I did an audio-only recreation of “Dogs” on my Tascam 38 half-inch 8-track tape machine. Some of the tracks, like the "stone" repeat echo and the barking dog (a neighbor's, recorded out my window for a half hour, with 13 clips then sampled and sequenced along with a wolf-howl sound effect), turned out well and were a lot of work — so I restored the Tascam 38 specifically to digitize those tracks, and then promptly sold it on craigslist for $40. In this video, the Tascam 38 appears when sounds from the old recreation are playing.
Electric guitar: Ibanez Roadstar II, through Line 6 POD and also recorded direct and run through IK Multimedia Amplitube. The lead-guitar camera is a GoPro mounted on a PVC pipe that's clamped to the headstock. The tunings are DGCFAD, drop-D (DADGBE) for the leads.
Acoustic guitar: $100 used Alvarez that's been repaired many times with metal plates and bolts, recorded with an AKG C414 mic and an old Radio Shack lavalier mic, apparently a trick used in Nashville. Tuning DGCFAD.
Bass: Atlansia Stealth recorded direct through original SansAmp DI and then through Amplitube. I detune the E string to D for the last note only.
Keyboards (Eddie): Korg Microkorg for the resonant-sweep part and vocoder on the barking dog sounds, IK Multimedia SampleTank for the electric piano (also sent through Amplitube for some grunge) and background synths.
Keyboards (Stove): Kurzweil PC1x for the organ, patch created from scratch with Alchemy (which comes with Logic Pro) for the synth solo.
Drums: Roland VDrums.
