What’s in these Lunar Lakes?!

Saturn’s moon Titan features vast lakes and seas composed of liquid methane and ethane, creating a unique and dynamic landscape. In today’s Proving the Concept daily science short, we explore the composition, behavior, and implications of these hydrocarbon bodies on Titan’s surface.

Key Insights:
• Composition and Distribution: Titan’s lakes and seas are primarily filled with liquid methane and ethane, hydrocarbons that exist as liquids at Titan’s surface temperatures. These bodies of liquid are known as maria (seas) and lacūs (lakes).
• Hydrological Cycle: Titan’s hydrological cycle mirrors Earth’s in some ways, with methane and ethane evaporating from lakes, forming clouds, and precipitating back to the surface as rain, contributing to the erosion and shaping of the landscape.
• Surface Features: The presence of liquid methane and ethane has led to the formation of rivers, lakes, and seas on Titan’s surface, including Kraken Mare, the largest known hydrocarbon sea, which covers an area slightly larger than Earth’s Caspian Sea.
