This Closed Landfill is the Perfect Place to Build Solar

Hundreds of American cities are maintaining contaminated land they legally own but can't build on, farm, or sell — and they're paying for the privilege. One Maryland city found a way to turn that liability into a revenue stream, and the engineering solution is simpler than you'd expect.

There are roughly 11,000 closed landfills in the United States covering nearly 500,000 acres. A recent study estimates that fully utilizing these sites for solar power could generate enough electricity to power 7.8 million homes.
