nf-core/animal-genomics: David Machugh

For the April 2026 talk of the Monthly Meeting of the #animal-genomics Special Interest Group, we were pleased to host David MacHugh from UCD School of Agriculture and Food Science at the University College Dublin (Ireland).

Dr. MacHugh is a Full Professor of Functional Genomics at University College Dublin, Conway Investigator, and member of the UCD One Health Centre, with over 170 peer-reviewed publications spanning livestock paleogenomics, host-pathogen interactions, and comparative genomics.

Find below the title and abstract of his talk:

Using genomics to understand bovine tuberculosis disease caused by infection with Mycobacterium bovis

Bovine tuberculosis (bTB), caused by Mycobacterium bovis, remains one of the most significant infectious diseases affecting cattle worldwide, with major implications for animal welfare, agricultural productivity, and public health. In this talk, Dr. MacHugh will discuss how genomic approaches are being used to illuminate host-pathogen interactions in bTB, including the development of biomarkers for M. bovis infection and the genetic basis of disease resilience. He will also present a One Health strategy that integrates comparative analyses of human TB (Mycobacterium tuberculosis) to advance our understanding across both human and animal populations.
