Indonesia | When Teachers Design AI, Education Becomes Human Again

Progress in AI education doesn’t only come from traditional economic centers. In Indonesia, it is increasingly driven by educators in cities like Bontang, who are reimagining how AI can create real impact in classrooms.

In January 2026, 200 educators from PAUD to SMA and SMK came together in Bontang City for a teacher training programme titled Designing an AI Ecosystem for Education. Delivered through a collaboration between Biji-biji Initiative, PT Kaltim Nitrate Indonesia, and the Government of Bontang City, the programme invited teachers to go beyond using AI tools and start designing AI solutions rooted in real classroom challenges.

Through a design thinking approach, teachers actively collaborated, prototyped, and exchanged ideas, showing a level of engagement noted as exceptional by the Head of the Bontang City Education Department. One winning prototype, Rasa Belajar, demonstrated how AI can help teachers understand students’ learning styles and translate insights into practical teaching strategies.

As emphasized by the Mayor of Bontang in her opening remarks, AI is not here to replace teachers, but to strengthen their role while keeping humanity at the heart of education.
