Before smart missiles existed, America's best guidance system had feathers. In the 1940s, psychologist B.F. Skinner pitched one of the strangest weapons programs in military history Project Pigeon. The concept was simple and completely bizarre. Train pigeons to recognize enemy targets, seal them inside a missile's nose cone, and let them steer by pecking at a projected image on a small screen. Peck left missile goes left. Peck right missile corrects course. During testing, the birds were surprisingly calm, focused, and accurate. They outperformed expectations every single time. The military was genuinely impressed. Then electronics caught up and the pigeons were quietly retired before a single one ever guided a missile in real combat. For a brief moment in history, the most advanced weapons program in America was being run by birds.
