⚡ What Is a JFET?
A Junction Field Effect Transistor (JFET) is a voltage-controlled, unipolar semiconductor device that regulates current flow using an electric field. It has three terminals:
- Gate (G) – controls the current
- Source (S) – entry point for carriers
- Drain (D) – exit point for carriers
Unlike BJTs (which are current controlled), JFETs use voltage at the gate to control the current between source and drain.

🧩 Types of JFETs
- N-Channel
- P-Channel

N-Channel JFETs are more commonly used due to higher electron mobility.

⚙️ How It Works
- The gate-source junction is reverse biased, creating a depletion region.
- As the gate voltage becomes more negative (for N-channel), the depletion region widens, restricting current flow from drain to source.
- When the gate voltage reaches a certain threshold (called pinch-off voltage), the current flow stops.

🌍 Real-World Applications
- Low-noise amplifiers in audio and RF circuits
- Analog switches and voltage-controlled resistors
- Oscillators and signal modulators
- Sensor interfacing in instrumentation systems

✅ Advantages
- High input impedance
- Low noise generation
- Simple biasing
- Good thermal stability

❌ Limitations
- Lower gain than BJTs
- Limited frequency response
- Sensitive to gate voltage polarity
