How to Deep Discharge Your Hybrid Battery and Avoid Replacing It - Honda Insight Civic Toyota Prius
In this video I'll show you how to do a deep discharge treatment on your Hybrid battery pack, which will bring it back from the dead or increase the usable pack capacity.
MOST HYBRID BATTERIES DO NOT NEED TO BE REPLACED. THEY NEED TO BE REBALANCED. Before you spend thousands of dollars on a new pack, please try this method and leave a comment.
DISCLAIMER: This method ONLY applies to older hybrids with NiMH battery packs. On newer lithium ion packs, I don't think it will work. Also, going super deep like this is probably not a great idea for a pack that is functioning properly, but if it's failing and barely working, might as well give this a try!
I'm using a 280k mile 2000 Honda Insight for this video, but the same should apply to a civic hybrid, toyota prius, or really any hybrid with NiMH cells. I purchased this car with a NON WORKING Hybrid system when it had 180k miles, and I'm still using that same battery pack 7 years later. Using the deep discharge technique, you can extend the life of your battery by an incredible margin. I tend to do a deep discharge on my Insight annually, and then grid charge it once a month to keep the battery in usable condition.
Supplies:
- A Grid Charger. Build your own or buy one from www.hybridautomotive.com
- An extension cord
- Scrap wood
- Porcelain Bulb Holder w Socket
Steps:
- Gridcharge (GC) for 24 hours
- Deep discharge the pack (some say don't go below 50v, I say they're wrong and go below 5v)
- Grid charge again
- Deep discharge again
- Grid Charge again
- Deep Discharge Again
- Grid Charge Again
THATS IT. This NiMH batteries have a memory, and overtime the packs have sticks of cells that become imbalanced to the other cells. Doing this process exercises the low and high ends of all the sticks, and makes the pack usable again.
Please leave your results in the comments below. Cheers!
