Norfolk Southern: Morning Clouds, Afternoon Sun - 4K

Ya gotta love wintertime!

Spent some time trackside on December 28, 2016. Amtrak's eastbound Pennsylvanian was met by heavy cloud cover in Latrobe, and a quick trip up the road to the big hill at Donahoe Road yielded conditions that were downright gloomy, which gave the meet between a heavy westbound manifest freight and eastbound stacks all the more gravity.

Later in the day we get back to the tracks and the sun is there to greet us at Manor. Directly after the eastbound train passes, a westbound one unit wonder oil train sneaks up on us. We then settle in at Wilmerding directly east of the CP Wing crossovers. Yet another westbound stack train is held briefly at the signal at the Westinghouse Air Brake Company for an eastbound, then departs, crossing through both sets of crossovers to take the Port Perry Bridge over the Monongahela River a few miles up the line. We stick around for a few more trains, including NS oil train 64T with heavily used SD70 #2539 (the "war wagon") and two visitors from the Canadian Pacific.

Shadows get deep early this time of year, but this was a fine cap to the year and provides a lot of incentive to get out there and railfan more in 2017.
