The fear of turning into a 'ghost town' has pushed the Sicilian town of Sambuca to revamp its livelihood by auctioning off empty houses starting at 1 euro ($1.12). Footage from Saturday shows how a city of 5,000 people started selling its houses to foreigners at the starting price of an espresso.
For Ada and Tomas, a couple who moved to Sambuca just a couple of years ago, it was the very "inviting people" that made them look for a house in the village.
According to Tomas, discovering the city's ancient history and having a group of "very nice" and "inviting people" in the city, helped them move forward with this adventure.
Sambuca resident, Pippo Rizzuto thinks that "with this talk of selling one-euro houses, Sambuca has become multi-ethnic and looks like a window into the world."
According to Sambuca's deputy mayor Giuseppe Cacioppo "a revolution of acceptance and of inter-culture" has taken place in Sambuca.
For Cacioppo "Sambuca has changed the centre of gravity for both Italy and Sicily," with a number of people from Europe, Russia and the US breathing fresh air into the town.
Last January, the municipality decided to start auctioning house starting at one euro, in a bid to attract people from all over the world to buy houses and help curb the demographic decline Sambuca has been suffering during the past decades.
