DIY soldering iron

This is a very useful everyday tool for DIY projects. The concept of this soldering iron is very simple. A piece nichrome wire form 1000 watt electric stove is used as the heating element for soldering iron. An insulation of cotton heat resistant sleeve is used as insulation. A bakelite terminal block is used for holding the soldering iron bit made up of about 3.5 mm thick copper wire. A lipo battery is used as the source of power supply. Length of nichrome wire was calculated by sliding the positive of battery on nichrome wire and holding negative at one end and current draw of five amperes was adjusted so that 12*5 becomes 60-watt soldering iron. It heats up very quickly. Instead of lipo battery, you can use any 12v power supply having ampere capacity of more than 2.5 to 5 amps. Hope you enjoyed this project.
