Meet Skiathos: Something For Everyone

There is much more to Skiathos than its 68 superb beaches, many of them with the coveted blue flags, its watersport facilities and nightlife. This family-friendly island has succeeded in providing all the amenities of a popular holiday destination, as well as unspoilt space for relaxing in quiet, natural surroundings.

The main tourist areas of Skiathos are situated on the southeast coast of the island, however the west coast and interior are remarkably unspoilt and will appeal to those who love wild and empty spaces. A network of paths and tracks criss-cross this landscape, giving access to the rugged coast with dramatic views across to the mountains of the Pelion Peninsula. Farming and horticulture are still the main occupation here, orchards and fields bounded by pine woods with a scattering of small traditional cottages.

By contrast Skiathos Town has managed to combine its development as a tourist centre and busy port while maintaining its original character of narrow alleyways, old churches and Venetian houses. The town comes alive at night, fortunately with none of the brashness of other Mediterranean resorts.

As Skiathos is one of the main entry points to the Sporades region, exploring neighbouring Skopelos and Alonissos, as well as the many smaller and uninhabited islands, by tour boat or inter-island ferry is simple. Much of the coastal waters around these islands have been declared as marine reserves, and regular boat expeditions leave Skiathos Town to explore the wildlife above and beneath the waves.

There’s never a dull moment on Skiathos but plenty of opportunity for that essential component of a Greek island holiday; relaxation in glorious surroundings!
