Why do large ships intentionally fill themselves with seawater? 😳🚢🌊

It may look dangerous, but ships often take in seawater as ballast water to improve stability. When a cargo ship is empty or lightly loaded, it sits too high above the water, making it more unstable in rough seas. By filling special ballast tanks with seawater, the ship lowers its center of gravity and becomes much steadier.

Ballast water also helps keep the propeller fully submerged for better efficiency and can even lower the ship’s height when passing under low bridges.

However, ballast systems also create environmental concerns because ships may carry small marine organisms from one region to another. That’s why many countries now require ballast water treatment and strict regulations before it can be released.

So when you see seawater entering a ship, it’s usually not flooding—it’s part of the ship’s stability system. 🔥🌊
