Gilli Danda Goes Global: Galicia's Billarda Proves It's Not Just an Indian Game

Billarda is a traditional folk game from Galicia in northwest Spain that is played with two wooden sticks a longer bat called the palan or marro and a shorter tapered peg known as the billarda. Players place the small peg on a base or hold it with one foot then strike it with the bat to make it jump into the air before hitting it again to send it as far as possible toward goal posts often in a team format similar to scoring runs or reaching targets. This game is nearly identical to India's ancient Gilli Danda which uses a gilli (small stick) and danda (long stick) in the exact same striking technique and has been played across South Asia for over 2500 years. In Spain Billarda was revived as an official sport around 2020 by the Galician Federation of Indigenous Sports leading to the professional Liga Galega de Billarda which features organized teams regular leagues playoffs and even international matches with players competing in jerseys. In India Gilli Danda remains largely an informal street and village game enjoyed by children though there have been grassroots efforts and calls to promote it more formally in schools and through local tournaments to preserve the traditional sport.
