In 1147, when King Afonso Henriques conquered Lisbon, the city's Muslim community was forced into a single valley below the castle. They called it Mouraria — the valley of the defeated. To remain in their own city, they paid the king for protection. With no mosque and no political standing, they built homes tight against the castle wall. Newcomers kept arriving to those same narrow streets for centuries. Eight hundred years later, Mouraria still carries the name they were given.
