Vixen!

Sex, Satire, and the Birth of Modern Exploitation Cinema

Director: Russ Meyer
Year: 1968
Genre: Sexploitation / Satire / Independent Cinema

Vixen! is one of the defining films of late-1960s exploitation cinema — a movie that arrived at the exact moment Western culture was beginning to fracture under the pressure of sexual liberation, political paranoia, and collapsing social taboos.

Directed by Russ Meyer, the film was marketed as scandalous entertainment, but beneath its provocative surface lies something stranger: a satirical portrait of a society obsessed with sex, power, nationalism, and repression.

At first glance, Vixen! appears to be little more than a low-budget erotic film designed to shock audiences with nudity and taboo subject matter. And in many ways, it absolutely is. Yet the film’s chaotic energy, aggressive dialogue, and bizarre tonal shifts elevate it beyond simple exploitation.

Like much of Meyer’s work, Vixen! exists somewhere between pornography, political satire, camp comedy, and social commentary.
