PETER MINTUN: Cocktails For Two (Sam Coslow-Arthur Johnston) 1934

The Danish singer Carl Brisson, Paramount's replacement for Maurice Chevalier, introduced this topical number in the 1934 film 'Murder At The Vanities.' The lyric celebrates the joys of a United States without the National Prohibition Act, which was repealed around this time. "No longer slinking/ respectably drinking/ like civilized ladies and men..." A suave, dressy image is conveyed by this song, which was ruthlessly and cleverly lampooned more than a decade later by Spike Jones and His City Slickers.
