MicroNugget: What are IP and MAC Addresses?

In this video, Jeremy Cioara explains what IP addresses and MAC addresses are. He also covers why — since an IP address directs traffic, and a MAC address identifies a device — we need both. The answer lies at the heart of modern networking technology.

At some point while studying networking technology, the question of why IP addresses and MAC addresses are different often comes up. Jeremy explains why there isn't just one address to rule them all.

First off, if all the billions of devices in the world were just connected to one another, each switch would have such a gigantic index it'd never keep up with all the tables. And so, differentiating the physical address of a device from the destination of a packet makes network traffic possible.

Jeremy also covers subnet masks and ARP requests in his explanation about how one address instructs what the final destination is while the other helps figure out the next step to getting there.
