How much salt does it take to poison an adult?

The medical literature lists an estimated lethal dose of between 0.75g and 3g per kilogramme of body weight. For a 75kg adult, that means a minimum of 56g of salt or about 10 teaspoons, taken all at once. But salt poisoning is about the concentration of salt in your blood, not the amount that you eat. Your body will remove excess salt through your kidneys and your sweat. If you have access to plenty of fresh water, you can cope with a much higher salt dose than if you are dehydrated.
