Originating all the way back in 1901, Schutzhund dog training was initially exclusively implemented on German Shepherds due to their exceptional temperament and working ability. However, it quickly became recognized the world over as the ultimate test of a dog’s temperament.

Fast forward to the present day, and Schutzhund and its German commands are still used worldwide to train dogs.

Why are they still using German commands?

Simply because the German commands are seen as being more clear and defined; therefore, they will stand out to your dog when used. In fact, the Schutzhund style of dog training suggests that you communicate with your dog using both formal and informal commands.

Furthermore, German is still the primary language used for police and military dog training because many dogs used for these purposes come from European countries, such as Germany, the Netherlands, and the Czech Republic, where they were trained using Schutzhund using German commands.


Many dog owners who employ Schutzhund use German commands and language for the formal portion of communication and English for the informal portion. This ensures that those who haven’t learned German cannot give the dog commands in a formal setting yet can communicate with them in an informal setting.

It’s actually possible to train your dog in many languages provided that you are consistent with the commands and the training.
