Choosing a container to paint:
I chose a variety of containers from my local thrift store. When choosing your pieces to paint look at the shapes and sizes of what you’re choosing. The color won’t matter so if you find a cool jar or bottle that has hideous colors buy it! You’ll cover those colors up and it’ll look amazing. Let your imagination inspire you!!

Before you start:
Make sure to clean the container before starting. Soap and water works, just make sure to rinse all the soap off or the paint won’t stick. If your container has a shiny finish your paint will stick better if you lightly sand it with a fine grit sand paper first. When you’re done sanding wipe down your container with rubbing alcohol and allow to dry.

Painting:
Chalk paint worked best for me on this project but a matte finish craft paint will look the same - it just may not stick as well. Take your base paint color and put the amount you’re going to use in a small container. Add in your baking powder a tsp full at a time and stir between additions. The paint will foam a tiny bit. You want a mixture that’s slightly thick - almost like a fluffy frosting. Apply this mixture like you would regular paint. Allow your first coat to dry before adding more. Additional coats will give you more texture. After your base texture and paint is done and dry you can go over your project with slightly darker paint to “age” it. I mixed a small amount of water with my darker paint to thin it out so it would apply more like a glaze or a stain. Try painting some on and using a paper towel to rub some off the applied paint off. You’ll see that it gives a worn, antique look to the project. If you accidentally use too much you can always wait until it dries and apply more of your original color in places to give it an authentic pottery look.

Finishing:
Depending on where you’re going to use your project piece you can leave it as is and you’re done! If it’s possible that your piece might get splashed you can finish it off with a coat of matte Modge Podge to seal and protect your new piece.

Options:
This technique works well with multiple paint colors as well as different containers. Experiment and see what amazing Pottery Barn style pieces you can create!
