Magnum Photographer Larry Towell On Street Photography

I met Magnum Photographer Larry Towell at the opening of his Union Station show in Toronto. We talked about his photographic process and the similarity between street and documentary photography.

Larry Towell is Canada's first member of Magnum Photos and one of my favorite photographers. He spent the last 4 years photographing the restoration of Union Station (Toronto's version of Grand Central Station) and the work is a poetic lovesong to the beauty of destruction and a nod to the future of Toronto's aging transportation hub.

The Bulger Gallery famously purchased Jeffrey Goldsteins collection of Vivian Maier images and it's is one the top photo galleries anywhere in the world. Larry Towell's Union Station was the first show at the new space at 1326 Dundas Street West in Toronto. The new gallery is beautiful and I'm looking forward to many more years of excellent exhibits in the new location. It's definitely someplace to visit when you're in Toronto.
