Pole Work Exercise Masterclass with Chloe Loane - Part 1
This exercise is fantastic for strengthening your horses' top line, increasing flexibility and fitness. It includes a trot serpentine, cavalettis and canter poles. Part 2 shows riding this exercise, coming soon.
It is important to warm your horse up correctly on both reins before you start. Teach them, step by step, so they learn what they need to do. Always do exercises on both reins, so your horse has an even workout.
First, we have the trot serpentine; the poles are set up on two sides of a circle. Have one side slightly longer and the other slightly shorter. This helps teach your horse how to shorten and lengthen strides and the commands associated with it. It also increases suppleness and flexibility of the horses back.
Then we have the cavalettis, make sure your horse is warmed up before you try this as it uses a huge amount of hind end power. If they are inexperienced, start with only one pole raised and do it a few times, then raise one more and work up to putting them all up.
When doing so much trot work, the horse can get bored or frustrated, so it's great to have some canter poles. This mixes it up and lets the horse lengthen his stride and stretch his neck.
Make sure you adjust the exercises to suit your horse and you as a rider.
