Gabriel García Márquez and Leandro Díaz ("The mythical patriarch of vallenato", according to Gabo) at a parranda vallenata in Cartagena, Colombia May 20 2013.

The song is La Diosa Coronada (The Crowned Goddess) by Leandro Díaz. Gabo told Leandro in 1966 that he wanted to write a novel based on the song. In 1985 he finally published the story of a crowned goddess (Love in the Times of Cholera) and quoted the song in the novel's epigraph.

Please note that the maestro Leandro Díaz was severely hearing disabled at this stage of his life.
