Every Smart TV Brand Is Collecting Your Data — Here's Why
Smart TV data collection 2026 — in December 2025, the Texas Attorney General sued Samsung, LG, Sony, TCL, and Hisense for collecting and selling viewer data without meaningful consent. This is not a Vizio problem. It is every brand.
The technology is called Automatic Content Recognition. It captures a snapshot of whatever is on your screen twice per second — cable, streaming, Blu-ray, gaming console, personal photos cast from your phone — and transmits it to the manufacturer to build a detailed behavioural profile tied to your household IP address. A Texas court issued a restraining order against Hisense in December 2025 and a second against Samsung in January 2026. Samsung subsequently agreed to require express consent before ACR collection in Texas on new setups. Every other brand's default is still on.
