চাঁদ শুধু কল্পনার জগতেই নয়, বাস্তবেও মানবজাতির জন্য হতে যাচ্ছে এক মহামূল্যবান খনি। নতুন এক গবেষণায় উঠে এসেছে, চাঁদের পৃষ্ঠে বিপুল পরিমাণ প্লাটিনাম গ্রুপ মেটালস সঞ্চিত রয়েছে। এর বাজারমূল্য আনুমানিক এক ট্রিলিয়ন বা এক লাখ কোটি মার্কিন ডলার—বাংলাদেশি মুদ্রায় প্রায় ১ কোটি ২২ লাখ ৫৩ হাজার কোটি টাকা। গবেষণা বলছে, চাঁদে প্রায় ৩ কোটি কেজি পর্যন্ত পিজিএম থাকতে পারে। এর মধ্যে রয়েছে রুথেনিয়াম, রোডিয়াম, প্যালেডিয়াম, অস্মিয়াম, ইরিডিয়াম ও প্লাটিনাম। ধারণা করা হচ্ছে, গ্রহাণুর আঘাতের ফলে এই ধাতুগুলো সেখানে জমা হয়েছে। তবে সবচেয়ে বড় প্রশ্ন—এই খনিজ পৃথিবীতে আনা গেলে বাজারে এর দামে কী প্রভাব পড়বে? বিশেষজ্ঞরা মনে করছেন, প্রথমদিকে বছরে কয়েক টনের বেশি উত্তোলন সম্ভব হবে না, তাই প্লাটিনামের দাম উল্লেখযোগ্যভাবে কমবে না। চাঁদে খনন কাজের চ্যালেঞ্জও কম নয়। সেখানে বায়ুমণ্ডল নেই, টেকটনিক প্লেটও নেই, আবার খনিজ প্রক্রিয়াজাতকরণে পানির ঘাটতি বড় সমস্যা হয়ে দাঁড়াবে। তবুও চাঁদের অবস্থান পৃথিবীর কাছাকাছি হওয়ায় রিমোট-কন্ট্রোল রোবটের মাধ্যমে খনন কাজ চালানো সম্ভব হবে।
