Lunar Starship selected for NASA's Human Landing System
What is NASA's human landing system? What are SpaceX's next steps to landing astronauts on the Moon?
In this video, we discuss NASA's Human Landing System (HLS) contract. In April of 2020, NASA selected three companies to develop vehicles to take astronauts from lunar orbit to the surface of the Moon. HLS is a part of NASA's Artemis program to return astronauts back to the Moon. The initial contracts were awarded to Dynetics, the National Team (led by Blue Origin), and SpaceX. On April 16th, 2021, NASA selected SpaceX to fulfill the contract.
For Starship to land astronauts on the Moon, there are multiple milestones that need to be fulfilled. Testing the landing capabilities for both Starship and Super Heavy. Secondly, in-space propellant transfer is necessary for Starship to get to the Moon. Lastly, NASA requires an uncrewed landing of Starship on the Moon prior to sending humans on board. SpaceX has many challenges to overcome with this contract, but it will be interesting to see the development play out over the coming years.
