SAE4 - Ghost Town (Bakhmut)

The Battle of Bakhmut is an ongoing series of military clashes near the city of Bakhmut between the Armed Forces of Ukraine and the Armed Forces of Russia during the larger Battle of Donbass. The shelling of Bakhmut began in May 2022, the main assault on the city began on August 1. The main strike force is primarily made up of mercenaries from the Russian paramilitary organization Wagner Group, supported by regular Russian troops and separatist elements of the DPR and LPR.

As of late 2022, following the Ukrainian counter-offensives in Kharkiv and Kherson, the Bakhmut-Soledar front became an important center of the war, being one of the few front lines in Ukraine where Russia continued to advance. Attacks on the city intensified in November 2022 when the advancing Russian forces were reinforced by units redeployed from the Kherson Front along with newly mobilized recruits. By this time, much of the front line had become a trench warfare, with both sides suffering heavy casualties without any significant gains. The intensity of the fighting in the Bakhmut direction is comparable to the periods of the First and Second World Wars. By March 2023, Russian troops had captured the eastern half of the city up to the Bakhmutka River.
Bakhmut, is a city located in the Donetsk Oblast of eastern Ukraine. The city has a population of around 75,000 people and is situated on the banks of the Bakhmutka River.

Bakhmut has a rich history, dating back to the 16th century when it was founded as a Cossack settlement. During World War II, the city was occupied by the German army and was heavily damaged during the fighting. After the war, Bakhmut was rebuilt and became an important industrial center, with a focus on mining and metallurgy.

In 2014, following the Euromaidan protests and the subsequent annexation of Crimea by Russia, pro-Russian separatists seized control of several cities in the Donetsk Oblast, including Bakhmut. Ukrainian forces recaptured the city in July 2014, but fighting between Ukrainian forces and separatist rebels continued in the area until a ceasefire was agreed upon in 2015.

Bakhmut is a peaceful city, with a mix of modern buildings and historic landmarks, including the Church of the Nativity of the Virgin Mary and the Bakhmut Castle. The city is also home to several museums, including the Bakhmut History Museum and the Museum of Mining and Metallurgy.
