Giant Snapping Turtle Up Close - Underwater Dragon

A common snapping turtle (Chelydra serpentina) patrols the water in one of the many Muskoka lakes in Ontario. As a distant relative of dinosaurs with a dragon-like appearance, snapping turtles are formidable and powerful, as are their jaws.

Unlike most other turtle species, common snapping turtles cannot retreat their heads and feet to the safety of their shells; they remain exposed at all times. And yet, as with all things in nature, there is a natural balance. Snapping turtles make up for this lack of refuge with an aggressive demeanor and physical characters to match: sharp edges on their tails, strong and sharp claws on their feet, and of course, sizable and powerful jaws.

But perhaps the most fascinating feature of snapping turtles is their tongues. The tongues have a small growth that wiggles and mimics a worm. These attract prey like fish to not only come toward the turtles, but to enter right into their mouths! Chomp chomp!
