Trump 'within his rights' to pursue claims of voter fraud in courts

One of America's most senior Republicans, Mitch McConnell, has backed the Trump campaign's decision to look into "legal avenues" regarding allegations of voter irregularities in the US election.

“President Trump is 100 percent within his rights to look into allegations of irregularities and weigh his legal options,” said Mr McConnell told the Senate on Monday, local time.

“Let’s not have any lectures about how the president should immediately, cheerfully accept preliminary election results from the same characters who just spent four years refusing to accept the validity of the last election.”

Only a few Republicans have come out to support president-elect Joe Biden's victory, with most endorsing the president's decision to contest the result in the courts.

Meanwhile, US Attorney-General William Barr has given prosecutors the green light to investigate allegations of voter fraud but warned they must only be substantial claims.

“Given that voting in our current elections has now concluded, I authorize you to pursue substantial allegations of voting and vote tabulation irregularities prior to the certification of elections in your jurisdictions,” Mr Barr said in a statement.

“Specious, speculative, fanciful or far-fetched claims should not be a basis for initiating federal inquiries.”

This comes as the Trump campaign launches legal action in a number of key swing states – Nevada, Arizona, Georgia and Pennsylvania.
