IFANG BONDI - Xaleli Africa

Ifang Bondi signifie, être soi même.
Le groupe est né en 1973, des cendres du Super Eagles. Le leader est Badou Jobe, le bassiste.
Ifang Bondi sort Saraba, un album réalisé par le label Disques Griot et mélant ndagga (rythme populaire gambien), mbalax, musique mandingue, musique pulaar (peule), highlife, afro-cubain, pop et blues. Nous sommes en 1977. Véritable institution de la scène africaine initiée par Badou Diop, ex Super Eagles de Gambie, Ifang Bondi (soit toi-même) aura attendu plus de 10 ans pour imposer un style peut-être trop avant-gardiste dans lequel se reconnaissent des générations de musiciens et groupes sénégambiens : Guelewar Band of Banjul, Xalam, Touré Kunda, Moussa Ngom, le Super Diamono, Omar Pène, Youssou Ndour et le Super Etoile, Ismaël Lo…

Ifang Bondi, meaning "be yourself" in Mandinka language, grew out of the former Gambian band called the Super Eagles. Founded in the 60's the Super Eagles was the undisputed top group in the Gambia and Senegal. In 1968 they toured Ghana, making an enormous impact with their very African sound in a country which was shortly to produce Osibisa.

In 1970 Super Eagles was disbanded only to rise up again in 1973, as Ifang Bondi. The name was new as the sound, featuring for the first time indigenous Senegambian rhythms, melodies and instruments. They integrated traditional instruments as kora, balafon, sabar, talking drum, bugarabu and djembe with mordern instruments as the electric guitar, base and keyboards.
