Is the Brexit Trade War Threat Over Now?

After people on all sides being convinced that Boris Johnson was going to trigger article 16 and unilaterally suspend his own brexit deal with the Northern Ireland Protocol, the language has completely changed to wanting a negotiated agreement. Did the threat of a trade war cause Johnson to back down and does he now need to accept that the protocol can be tweaked but must remain in place?
